The Ideal Diet for Your Rabbit

Just like people, animals also need a healthy and varied diet in order to keep them fit and well and to ensure their teeth are kept in good condition. Many people believe simple rabbit muesli will be good enough for their fluffy friends; however they need a variety of foods in their diet to ensure they get all the nutrients they deserve:

Fresh water and hay:

It’s essential that your rabbits have access to clean drinking water at all times. Water bottles as opposed to bowls are a good idea because it means you can keep track of how much they’re drinking each day.

You should also provide your rabbits with good quality hay, Timothy hay if possible, on a daily basis. This should make up a large majority of their everyday food. Nibbling on hay is the best way for your rabbits to keep their teeth short and at a manageable length.

Rabbit Pellets:

If possible you should try to avoid feeding your rabbits muesli as this causes them to have very selective eating habits, eating the treats and leaving the nutritious bits. It’s important to remember, pellets are packed full of nutrients so your rabbits only really need a small amount each day; this ensures that they’ll continue to munch on their hay and greens throughout the day.

Fruit and Veg:

You should aim to feed your rabbits a variety of greens each day, your rabbits will enjoy a wide range of greens including:

• Basil
• Broccoli
• Brussels Sprouts
• Carrots
• Cabbage
• Cauliflower
• Courgette
• Dandelion Leaves
• Green Beans
• Rocket
• Salad Peppers
• Parsley
• Spinach
• Watercress

You can also feed your rabbits fruit however this should be given in moderation and only as a treat as they are high in sugar, your rabbits will love these fruits, providing they are in small amounts:

• Strawberries
• Apples
• Grapes
• Pears
• Plums

Rabbits will also enjoy munching on grass, so make sure they have plenty of opportunity to get out in the garden during the warmer months. Here at Eggshell we have a range of rabbit hutches and a selection of runs available, so you can ensure your rabbits are safe all day long whether they’re in their hutch or enjoying the garden in their run.
