Beginners Guide to Caring for Your Rabbit

There are around 1.7 million rabbits kept as pets in the UK today, which makes them one of the most popular pets, coming a close third behind dogs and cats. Having a rabbit in the home can be great fun for the whole family and very rewarding but you do need to know how to care for them correctly. Here are a few tips for the beginners:

How Many Rabbits Should I Get?

Rabbits live happiest in pairs. Males and females get on very well; however they both need to be neutered to ensure you don’t have lots of babies hopping about. Two males or two females will also live comfortably together, but it’s still important to get them neutered as this will improve their behaviour, increase their life expectancy and you’ll have happier bunnies!

Where Should They Live?

If your rabbits are going to live outside you need a hutch with plenty of space for them to live in. You need to make sure it will provide them with plenty of warmth and shelter during the winter months. Rabbits need a lot of space to play around in so it’s important they also have a run to use during the day but be sure to shut away in their hutch overnight to keep them safe.

What Should They Eat?

Rabbits need a varied diet; you should try to avoid feeding them the mixed muesli as they become very selective with their food. Instead feed them a small amount of rabbit pellets each day along with fresh green veg like broccoli and cabbage. And don’t forget they need grass and hay to nibble on to ensure their teeth are kept to a comfortable length.
