5 Ways to Keep Your Rabbit Cool
Summer’s here, which means that plenty of critters and creatures are going to be doing their best to stay cool in the increasing warmth! However, spare a thought or two for your pets – particularly rabbits, who often spend much of the season outside in rabbit hutches. There are, however, plenty of ways through which you can help to make summer easier on your pet bunnies. If you’re not already a seasoned rabbit owner, you might not know which options are best to take – so let’s guide you through some of the best ways to keep your rabbit cool.
Choose the Right Bunny Hutch
The rabbit hutch you set up for your bunny could make all the difference. They’re going to need plenty of ventilation, for one thing, as well as lots of shade. The last thing you’re going to want to do is to leave your bunny out in the full glare of the sun! These fuzzy creatures are only ever going to overheat in the sun – meaning that if you can give them lots of shade and lots of fresh air, it will all be to their benefit throughout the summer.
Give Them Lots of Water!
Water – of course – is a must. However, you must make sure that water that your rabbit has access to is regularly topped up afresh. It’s going to need to be nice and cool – but not too cold – as it’s at risk of getting pretty warm in the direct sunlight. Vigilance and regular care are absolute musts!
Offer Them Wet Foods
By this, we mean juicy vegetables such as lettuce – which carries plenty of water. Even if your bunny doesn’t go for the actual water supply that often, they are going to benefit from food which has plenty of water in its makeup.
Dried food isn’t as moist, hence the name, and is unlikely to help them with hydration. Make sure to consult with your vet if you are unsure but try to strike a balance!
Position Your Hutch Well
Once you’ve found and purchased the perfect hutch for your rabbits, you’re going to need to keep it in the shade. As stated, the best bunny hutches will offer lots of shade – but you will always do just as well to position their enclosure as far back into the cool as possible. This way, they’re always going to be able to cool down whenever they need to.
